Any idea when the Navy is going to announce the name for their next CVN? I'd heard a story a year or so ago that Sen. John Warner had a bill that would require the Navy's next two carriers to be name Lexington & Saratoga. Is there any truth to this? It would be nice if they'd stop their horrible habit of naming CVNs after politicians.

That would be nice, probably won't happen though. Is this the next gen carrier or another Harry S. Turman class boat?

I think it will be named the Hillary R Clinton or the Madeline Albright.

So you're saying that this new carrier will have a larger stern than previous ships of the class? :D

USS Lexington and USS Saratoga sounds awesomes, somethings outta Star Trek :P

Lexington and Saratoga have a much longer, and prouder, lineage than Star Trek... <_<

They would be good names, as would Essex and a host of other warship names (Hornet, Intrepid, Constellation, to name a few).

That website is a pettition site to try to get the navy to name her America. It does not say that that is what its name will be. So no, it hasn't been named yet.

Officially Essex and Hornet are both in use.

Essex is a Wasp class amphibious ship, and according the the USS Hornet Museum, the name was chosen for the F/A-18 to carry on the lineage, so I guess it takes it out of contention as well.

Wasn't Voyager an Intrepid class starship? Constellation was Constitution class, like Enterprise...

I don't see Big E going to CVN79: They have to decom the old one first!

[smacking myself on the forehead.] I had nearly tossed out Yorktown but remembered that there is a cruiser of that name. I lay the blame on the fact that my references are all in storage (handily ignoring the fact that I have internet access). ;) Constellation was also used by a CV (recently retired) and more than one ship during the age of sail. As far as I know, there is no reason not to name a ship Hornet, even if the aircraft shares the name. I was just pointing out that there are several good historical ship names available, rather than continuing along the Politician of the Week path. Ironically, as you point out, the Gator Navy has been getting the good names (Wasp, Essex, etc.). The wonders of politics...

How about:

"Great Marianas Turkey Shoot"???????

Or just Turkey.

That way ALL the politicians will be covered....

There's a few names that would be cool: Oriskany, Bennington, Coral Sea, Midway (I don't think those are taken).

CVN-80 ought to be enter service right around the 100th anniversary of the USS Langley's commisioning. I doubt the Navy will pick that name, but it would be nice. After that they could name CVN-80 and 81 Enterprise and Yorktown, since the CG ought to be out of service by then. Of course, they'll probably end up naming the ships after some damned appropriations committee chair.

USS Force Projection Platform.

Too many syllables, but it does define the ships function nicely.

USS FPeePee (USS FPP) is less intimidating yet.

What's wrong with good, traditional name like USS Leonid Brezhnev?

No wait, wrong superpower...

USS Slayer of Infidels

Considering that carriers have 40-year service lives, I think this name would be appropriate for the next few decades. Seriously though, why don't we give our ships cool ass-kicking names like the Galactic Empire, the Imperium of Mankind, or the British?

USS Dominator

USS Retaliator

USS Annihilator

USS Ravager

Names that might actually intimidate people, rather than USS Harry S. Truman, which merely conjures up images of some small old guy with glasses.

I believe Yorktown is available again. A number of the early Ticos have been withdrawn.

She might still be on the list though.
