  1. I'm surprised that it seems to be a unanimous decision for the Acer. I thought that the slightly more powerful E5400 processor would be the sticking point. The Acer has a few more USB ports, and a HDMI and firewire, although i'm not sure how much i'll use them. Can someone elaborate on anything i'm missing as to why the Acer would be the better purchase ? I know eMachines seems to have a mixed reputation, is that the biggest thing ? The graphics card comparison, Nvidia 7050 as opposed to the 9200, is there really that big a difference considering they're both integrated ? I wanted to stay away from a laptop because I wanted to pair the new computer with my old monitor, and since I don't have much use for mobile computing, the desktop seems to be bigger bang for the buck specs wise. Being able to upgrade the graphics card or RAM easily at a later date would also be nice. I have one more PC to submit for comparison (wanted to keep the price at about $400). Thankyou for all your replies. http://www.amazon.com/Compaq-Presario-CQ53...2/ref=de_a_smtd
  2. I was wondering if I could get some advice on a cheap PC. Intended uses are internet, audio/video playback, and light, non graphics intensive gaming. Which is the better value ? http://www.amazon.com/eMachines-ET1831-07-...671&sr=1-40 http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AX1301-U1302-De...e=UTF8&s=pc
  3. Yeah, if you check back a week or so ago I started an AA thread. If you check back months and months ago I think there were one or two people who played here.
  4. First you MUST be one of the 8 Great powers when the event fires off in 1885. If you are you'll get a choice as to whether or not you want to invest in it. Some of the other 7 AI nations will decline (it's expensive) others will accept. Out of those who accept the actual builder/owner of the canal is randomly chosen.
  5. -Jim Paper probably wasn't available, its pretty scarce most of the game. The trade AI will bankrupt you in the early game, setting it to manual is your best bet.
  6. As long as you are not Laissez Faire (don't remember what party Texas starts out as), you can make social reforms for a steep price in the politics screen. Click that one, and then you should see three 3d buttons, the top being your current party, second voting rights/free press etc., and third social reforms. Unfortunately you can't get rid of slavery except by event. Since that event fires only when Texas is part of the Union, I don't think you can abolish slavery as Texas unless you write your own event. If I remember correctly Texas starts out with a very low population to begin with. In order for immigration to occur you mainly need two things, jobs, and social reforms. Make sure your workers have good healthcare and a decent working environment. Then make sure you have put up rails and have a few profitable factories. Assuming that every space in your factory isn't filled immigrants should come to fill it. Expand your factories if you need more slots available. There is the fast way and the not so fast way. First you can convert farmers or laborer POPs to soldiers for more manpower instantly. Click one of your big farmer stacks, like 100000 men. Convert them to soldiers and you'll notice that your manpower rating just shot up. You can now recruit new divisions. Another way is to max out defense spending. Your manpower and leadership will grow on their own and you can recruit divisions that way, or store reserves. As Texas you shouldn't really have a large standing army, so recruit what you think you need and store the rest as reserves. Hope that helps.
  7. Until you grasp the economic system the game is tedious at first, took me a couple days to get comfortable. The manual is actually the best yet but there are alot of details that aren't covered. Alot of the manual complaints are because, AFAIK every version but the North American one shipped missing a fold out appendix. The trade model has a list of goods produced by a country that are available for the world market. The trade AI is more hassle than its worth IMO, especially in the early game. You can basically set your factories to sell excess commodities or buy stuff you may need, like furniture for instance. -Murph Texas is tough early on ! You may have to trade a province or two for peace. Then later ally with the Union or CSA and get some territory back. Texas (and any North American nation) will get wild immigration as long as you pass a few social reforms. [Edited by MrOuija (01 Dec 2003).]
  8. The Scandinavian version (which is in english anyway) shipped first. If anyone is looking for the game in the U.S, Gogamer.com is quick, and seems reliable. Good luck with Texas, you'll be lucky not having half your state annexed by Mexico in the first couple years..
  9. Anyone tried this one yet ? Great game, from the makers of the Europa Universalis series. The learning curve is high initially but it's worth it, and at only $39.95
  10. They actually do replenish ammo. Just place the vehicle you want replenished next to the carrier, usually for about two turns, and you'll get fresh ammo. For helicopters land them in the adjacent square.
  11. SPCammo is the group that made Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank (SP:MBT). Yep, basically. 1950-2020
  12. If anyone is interested, the third, and latest version of armormod (created with a ton of input from people on this board) is available here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SPMBT/files/...s/armormod3.zip
  13. Penta- No, completely different game.
  14. Thanks ! Has mods on it ? I thought it should just be a fairly small .exe that you can copy and send ? I haven't checked it in awhile so I don't really remember.
