  1. Just how effective are modern ECM at battlefield level? Wouldn't radio communication between the "mother ship" and the scouts be affected by these measures? I could imagine that in case this type of system were implemented, that tactical echelon signal interception / interruption would quickly be developed. So you would have to revert back to autonomous vehicles with AI, which won't be viable for many years. Back to square one. I think the robotic-assisted positions / missions within an AFV are very likely. But having seen the comments from tank crews on this grate sight™ over the last years, wouldn't the non-operating work load on the three-man crew be enormous (e.g., maintenance, guard duty, etc.)?   4. I lived in Deggendorf on the Danube, which is about halfway between Regensburg and Passau, and got to know the area quite well. (I was looking for traces of the Hungarian Army from WWII). As has been mentioned the terrain between the Czech border and the Danube is mountainous and heavily wooded (the Donau Wald), with numerous winter resorts and ski areas. Also hilly, curvy, narrow roads. In fact, there are no four-lane (dual-carriageway) roads through this area. The nearest Autobahn is the A3 (E56), which runs parallel to the Danube, from Nürnberg – Deggendorf – Passau. The Danube in this area flows about 50 - 60 kilometers (measured by road) parallel to the Czech border. There are not too many bridges across the Danube in this area. Assuming the WP forces do reach the Danube, there are many places where amphibious vehicles can enter and leave the river. Much of the A3 (E56) is on the east side of the Danube, but crosses it several times. Also, there is the A92 (E53) which runs from Deggendorf straight to Munich. Cheers Leo

  10. Food for thought. Would Stalin have continued to fight the Germans if there were no Lend Lease, or a promise of a "second front"? My creaking memory seems vaguely to recall that Stalin seriously considered offering peace terms to the Germans, but was encouraged by the other Allies to continue on. Of course, the Germans might have refused. And frankly, I don't see the British winning North Africa without the US military equipment. Just try and imagine, for example, the British in North Africa without Stuart/Honey's, Lee/Grant's and Shermans. The Axis in Tunisia/Libya/Egypt would have been hard to beat without the French North Africa landings at their backs. And French North Africa would certainly have resisted the British. Without the military and industrial might of the USA weighing in, there was little hope that there would be an invasion of continental Europe. Cheers Leo
  11. (My emphasis in the quote above) Well, there were hardly "equal terms" involved here. For an order of battle, see 1940 Scandinavian Campaign. As can be seen from this link, the Germans had the 139th Mountain Infantry Regiment (three battalions), landed by ship, which had lost all of its heavy equipment when three other ships carrying it did not arrive in Narvik. One battery of mountain guns and some reinforcements were parachuted (or air landed) in the area. The 139th was joined by the crews of the destroyers sunk by the RN in the Fjord. The Allies had French 1st Light Chasseurs Division, (with five battalions, an artillery battalion, a tank company, and other support units), the Polish Brigade (four Polish battalions), and British 24th Guards Brigade (three battalions), against the Germans in Narvik, in addition to the 6th Norwegian Brigade. And, as usual, the RN had control of the seas, and besides ensuring supplies, provided fire support. Nothing against the troops fighting on either side, (and it was a hard fight just against the climate and terrain), but it really was not an even match. Furthermore, the Germans held out for six weeks (to the end of May) against this overwhelming Allied force. Hardly an event to crow about on the Allied side, I would think. Cheers Leo

  13. Having been both in the position of publishing my own books, and having them published by others, I would like to add some thoughts. My comments below should also be seen in the light that I like to have control of how the reader sees the book I have authored. Publishing your own: You have complete control of everything. From layout to distribution. Offset printing is an expensive proposition, especially if you have small runs (500-1000 copies). Fixed costs make up a large percentage of the outlay, unless you are doing 10,000's. There is also printing-on-demand, which is more affordable, although not the same quality. There is the hassle of distribution, including running after people for money. The usual time between delivery and payment, for the small buyers, was three months. And foreign checks or payments - in Germany at least - sometimes cost more to collect then the amount being paid. The large distributors took as long as six months to pay, if at all. (One large UK company went into receivership twice.) The more books a distributor takes, the larger reduction you have to give. Then many distributors only take "on commission", meaning that if they haven't sold the books after a while, they get to return them, for a refund, of course. Publishing through a large company: You are a cog in the machinery, unless you are a very successful author. You have very little, if any, influence on layout; sometimes content is edited or even deleted, and there is no control over anything else. You submit the manuscript in accordance with their requirements, and sit back and hope they sell a lot of books (10% of net copy price). If they don't, they "remainder" the rest, meaning you might get 10 cents for each book sold. Small books are almost paperbacks, for which the royalties are even smaller (usually 5% of net copy price). Publishing through a small company: This is can be risky, in that although you have not invested any money in the publishing end of things, you might be out of your royalties. Happened to me once. But, having said that, it is by far the most rewarding method to publish for me, the author. You have a lot of control over how your manuscript is handled. Presently, I do the layout, so it is 100% in my hands. The publisher does the printing, binding, distribution, collecting money, etc. It publishes in hard and soft covers, and even allows me a say in page thickness, cover appearance, and asks me about advertising message, media, etc. And royalties come in. Small publishers tend to specialize. If you have a "niche" product, look for a small publisher that does this topic, and they will be more inclined to publish it than others would. Cheers Leo
  14. On the one hand, the US (a neutral nation / at peace) is scandalized with Japan (a nation already at war) when it attacked Hawaii without a due declaration of war. On the other hand, the US (a nation already at war) is justified in attacking France (Vichy was a neutral nation / at peace) when it invaded French North Africa without a due declaration of war? The US is shocked when the French defend themselves by firing at them? Nobody told the French troops (or their leaders) that the US was coming to "free" them. And, as has been amply pointed out in this thread, the British were certainly not regarded as friends, and the designation "liberators" would hardly have been applied to them by the Vichy French. There were no German troops in Vichy France (or French North Africa, for that matter), so the invasion was directed against France, officially a neutral country. This is a nice a case of the end justifying the means - that might makes right - and that the victors write the history books.
