  1. This is a beautiful depiction of tanks, but it has no soul. You're effectively playing for a very expensive screenshot simulator. And unless it's changed since it was officially released, it's very much a tank game inside of a flight sim. The control scheme is complicated and difficult to figure out when it doesn't need to be, and remapping the controls is similarly a headache. I remember trying out the SU-122 in one of the quick battles just to try it out and I kept getting hammered by halftracks and Stug IIBs because I couldn't figure out how to 1) get to the gunner position (it apparently w

  3. Promising but a very long and difficult development road ahead of them. I'll check back in 3-4 years to see where they are.
  4. I really love the game. t's not the cleanest release, sure, but it's got style and substance. I don't know any open world game that's had a clean release, but I'm pretty far into the game now and I haven't had any game breaking bugs or performance issues, just some minor glitchy stuff. I can see the ambition CDPR had any sometimes I notice where they fell short, but to be honest it doesn't bother me. I also love that the game is like an alternate timeline of the 1980s - like the worst fears of the Reagan era realized. This world fits in with the Blade Runner and Robocop and Predat
  5. Seven tons each. Can't even sling load 'em on a Blackhawk. I like the idea - and I'm not totally sure if these are supposed to be the vehicles that support an infantry squad - but that's pretty heavy, especially since it can only carry about 3.5ish tons. What is the purpose of these specific vehicles, anyway? Log? Recce?
  6. https://twitter.com/CMC_MarineCorps/status/1300513520052776961 CMC talking about the need for a new light amphibious warship.
  7. Necroposting, but I blame the absence of a proper search function, The Navy is retiring the first four LCSes (OCIR = Out of Commission In Reserve). Has there ever been a USN ship class that has started retirement even before all the build orders are complete? The Coronado was only commissioned 6 years ago. 8. They're not even keeping a minimal capability in the Reserve?
  9. Harry Yeide's books are among my favorite. I wish he was around here...
  10. I'm hesitant to ressurect this topic, but I did a forum search (via google) for updates to the program and didn't find anything explicit. Anyway, the Army has downselected two vehicles for test batches of 12 vehicles each. The BAE M8 (newest pic I could find, only a partial for some reason): And the GDLS Griffon-derived (unnamed?) light tank:
  11. There were Chieftains in the game, but at least in the last version I played you couldn't control them. Only T-62 and M60A1.
  12. That summarizes my entire experience with mathematics. If only I could have applied it practically, I would have been far more interested. Statistics was the only math that really got my interest.
  13. IIRC the Navy has talked about shopping construction to at least one other yard to increase the rate of production. Not sure if that will be Austal or someone else.
  14. I thought Inoticed your handle on the discord. When I signed up for the steel beasts beta team, we were I thought headed towards a simulation based on the cold war environment. I still yearn for something in that realm, and I dont really care at this point how lite it is. Heck, Id even take something in the M1 tank platoon 2 mould. I want tanks to be fun again. Steel Beasts is fun, if I'm in the mood to be in a combined arms team again. War Thunder is sometimes fun, when I don't want to throw it out the window because something bizarre happened (HEAT round impacts a towing lug and my ta
  15. It is a Steel Beasts competitor when it is not trying to be a simulator? It might be more of a competitor for War Thunder. I signed up for the Patreon.
  16. I wonder how old those reports are. If that was a problem when the Compact was first fielded (in the 60s) then I'm willing to bet they were eventually resolved.
  17. The Navy seems fixated on the small boat problem with the 57mm - and even then the system's only good out to about 8km, which isn't much at sea and is outranged by the Iranian homemade 76mm. The latest gen 76mm/3-in Oto guns the Italians use (like what we had on the Perrys) is far more capable, comes in a low-observable turret and even has SAL-guided rounds that go out to 40km. With your helos and UAVs providing terminal guidance to those 76mm rounds you can theoretically kill those Iranian small boats over the horizon. Maybe a mid-life upgrade project, then.
  18. It wasn't stated in the article cited, and here's the full translated text of the requirements: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.sgex.eb.mil.br/sistemas/be/copiar.php%3Fcodarquivo%3D977%26act%3Dsep&prev=search The actual part about armor, where 900+mm is not mentioned (but certainly could be implied): ROA 91 - To have, in the combat compartment, frontal armored protection against ammunition of kinetic energy of up to 120 mm (one hundred and twenty millimeters) APDS-T fired with elevation from 0 ° (zero degree) to 30 ° (thirty degrees), 1000 m (on
  19. Then the most logical solution is a BMP-2M with 4x Kornet launchers, and Kornets for the dismounts. Those ammo restrictions basically force you to go with the 30mm 2A42/72-armed vehicles, and that means you've gotta deal with the Russians sooner or later. Troops on benches shouldn't be a no-starter for the K21. Troops have been sitting on benches in the back of vehicles since the horse first pulled something with wheels. I'd still go for the K21 with Spike ATGMs on the turret (in lieu of the Korean ATGM) and dismounts. Let the reservists burn through the old 30mm ammo with their BMP-2s to m
  20. Not even close enough armor on that one. I'm under the impression that there's no armor requirement, save for hard or soft kill APS and "additional armor."
  21. ESSM (quadpacked) is expected to be the main SAM system. The VLS are not Strike-length (so no Tomahawks, SM-3/6 or VLS LSRASM) and may have the capability for VLASROC and SM-2. The FREMM design has been rendered with and can fit at least 16x cells for NSM (or Harpoon) which is a pretty nice punch. The latest gen ESSMs are capable of area air defense, too, not just local.
  22. Hiya, folks... What is an Ammunition Train Battalion? The 76th Tank Battalion of the US Army was formed from the 727th "Ammunition Train Battalion" (formed in 1944, ended the war on Okinawa) in 1946. I haven't found a good reference to what this kind of battalion is. In the Coast Artillery, I see references to "Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and Ammunition Train, Battalion, Antiaircraft" but nowhere do I see an Ammunition Train Battalion. Could this be a typo of some sort? There was a 727th Railway Operations Battalion that served in Europe in 1944. No 727th Coast Artillery anythi
  23. Seeing as there's no one tank in existence that fits the bill for all the requirements, it'd be interesting where they're willing to trade a stated capability for a boost to another capability (or cost). First thing I thought of when I read the RFP was the requirements are pretty similar to the US Army's MPF program. Maybe one of those two vehicles could be contenders? Being smaller vehicles they might be better suited to Brazilian's often poor tank terrain too.
  24. Actually, I would second this. The ROKs might even be willing to discount them or provide offsets to get an intro to the European market (see the K9 SP 155mm which is NATO's current favorite artillery system). The ROKs are also half a world away, and are unlikely to intervene in any meaningful way for any regional conflict that Tankovia might gen entangled into... no political baggage. And if the K21 is good, and affordable, maybe excess K1A1s or new K9s are too? A K21 overmatches anything the Turks have in service as well, save for Leo2s and the uparmored M60Ts. Throw on a turret-mounted AT
