  1. Just my 2 cents - while i completely agree and abide by the copyright laws enforced by the forum - just wondering if a book is out of print and the publishing entity has also changed hands and few available copies sell for as high as 300 bucks on ebay - is there a harm in sharing a soft copy for private circulation as long as it remains within a closed set ?
  2. The web site is http://www.motorbuch.de
  3. Has anyone read the latest Tankograd book on the Leo 2 ? Kampfpanzer Leopard 2 - Development and German Army Service by: Henk Meerdink 300 Pp E: 49.00 Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank - Development and German Army Service With 679 photographs, 97 graphics and 2 four-side 1/35 scale drawings on 320 pages this is the most comprehensive study on the Leopard 2 MBT ever published! Full English text! The Leopard 2 has in the past thirty years repeatedly underlined its leading position as the most capable main battle tank of the world. This publication shows the complete development history starting with the prototypes, covering the various series-production batches A0 to A6M and also gives an outlook on future modernisation efforts as currently displayed by the Demonstratoren and the PSO/UrbOps. The technical and historical aspects are complemented by walk-arounds and comprehensive coverage on the Leopard 2 in German Army ‘Bundeswehr' active service.
  4. As per a recent request - am enclosing a review of the book Disclaimer - since the book is entirely in German with only english captions and my german is rudimentary - navigating through the book is cumbersome. This is a superb work on recent tank technology with many color photos and diagrams. It is expected that this is a supplement to Ogarkiewicz's standard book on Tank Technology which somebody was kind enough to give me an e-copy as its not available any more . Rolf Hilmes is an acknowledged authority on MBT concepts along with Ogorkiewicz Foss and Zaloga. Rolf starts with details about armor developments of MBT95, T-95, "Black Eagle", Leclerc tanks and MBT2000 the United States, Russia, France, Germany and Sweden, as well as current vehicles of such as the M1A2, Challenger 2, T-90, T-80U M1, T-80U M2, T-84 and T-84U, Leopard 2 A5/A6/A6M, Strv.122, Merkava IV and XK-2 (South Korea ). Around 60 pages are devoted to the developments in Russia on the tank design of the T-64, 72, 80 and 90 . The large part of the book is on the technology components of future battle tanks. In terms of weaponry and new technologies, the efficiency of existing guns, low recoil arms, 140mm tank gun, ammunition, new developments, such PELE ammunition, temperature controlled detonators, non-lethal ammunition, SCDB propellant, guided missiles, and on possible alternative weapons, such as the electro-thermal-chemical gun, the electrothermal gun, the electromagnetic cannon, etc. The evolution of engine technology , with the diesel engine development in Germany, USA, UK, Russia, Ukranie, HPD and the engine and the development of gas turbines, diesel-electric and hybrid drives. There is also information on developments in drive technology, damping systems, tracked, protection concepts, and measures to prevent hit avoidance, embedded active protection systems ( SHTORA-1), embedded active hard-kill systems (DROZD and ARENA), reactive, power armor, armor, and their passive materials, mine protection, and measures to reduce secondary damage. In conclusion Rolf addresses the future vehicles and concepts and trends. The Annexure of 20 pages containing technical data of the main types of tanks, and 1:72 drawings . Its a comprehensive and technically brilliant work - MUST BUY - with english and German captions for photos and otherwise in German text only . One draw back i see is that the book is more on current trends and less on existing tank technology - maybe the reader is expected to have the basic knowledge - hence basic tank layout , cross-sections are missing. Also a chapter on fire control would have made it interesting . I Wish the publishers consider an English version as translation has been very cumbersome.
  5. Is there an e-book version of Kampfpanzer..." 1st edition - available ?
  6. After a long time seeing a similar book like the rare Technology of Tanks by Richard Ogorkiewicz This is by Rolf Hilmes another noted Panzer author - brief description - entirely in German though Kampfpanzer heute und morgen (Hardcover) by Rolf Hilmes Book Description : This title deals with the perspectives, trends and the potential risks of future developments in the field of tank technology. It is a book that is sophisticated and in an -depth manner deals with the design of modern battle tanks and the current and future assemblies technologies - 13pp 1:72 scale plans. Diagrams. 140 colour & 65 b/w photos . Source | Midland Counties - IAN ALLAN # Hardcover: 448 pages # Publisher: Motorbuch Verlag (2007) Attached image of the book cover in avatar as i dont seem to have upload permissions Has anyone read this ?
  7. agree - the T-72 book was excellent read in 1995 when I got the book and there was a technical description of inside the tank - heard an updated version is in the works
  8. PRODUCTION AND INITIAL SERVICE ISSUES - yes to an extent given the number of pages available Combat experience - very sketchy Technical Description :
  9. Here's a review : i HAVE BOUGHT MOST OF ZALOGA'S EARLIER WORKS AND FOUND THEM TO BE EXCELLENT - ESP THE T-72 IN THE SAME SERIES . HOWEVER - I FIND THIS A BIT BELOW PAR FIRST - THE MARGINS ON THE LEFT INNER SIDE AND RIGHT INNER SIDE ARE REALLY CRAMPED - ONE HAS TO REALLY STRETCH THE BOOK TO READ . NEXT THE HISTORY AND ORIGINS ARE WELL COVERED AND ZALOGA ATTEMPTS TO COVER THE VARIOUS VERSIONS T-80 B , BV,D & T-80 U - AND THIS IS WHERE THE BOOK FALLS FLAT THERE IS NO SECTION CALLED INSIDE THE T-80 TANK UNLIKE THE T-72. - THE BASIC TECHNICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE T-80 ARE COMPLETELY OMITTED - ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SECTIONS ON REACTIVE ARMOR , HISTORY OF THE DIESEL POWER PLANT (WHY NOT ON THE BASIC GAS TURBINE ??) , POTTED SECTIONS ON the Kobra missile AND the Refleks missile- NOTHING ON THE MAIN 125 mm GUN - LOOKS LIKE THE PUBLISHER COMPLETELY TRIMMED THE INTERESTING TECHNICAL BITS. HOWEVER THE TEXT AND COLOR PHOTOS ARE GOOD - OBVIOUSLY ZALOGA HAS A HUGE AMOUNT TO TELL AND HAS VAST INFORMATION AND OSPREY STRUGGLED TO FIT IN THE BASICS IN 48 PAGES AND LIMITED IT MORE TO HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT RATHER THAN TECHNICAL. THERE IS A BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE FAILURES IN CHECHYNA AND SOME GOOD ARTWORK BY TONY BRYAN FEEL OSPREY WILL BE BETTER SERVED TO CHANGE THEIR PRINTING AND ALSO LOOK AT PUBLISHING THIS AS TWO PARTS - SECOND PART CAN ALSO COVER MORE OF THE TECHNICAL DESCRIPTIONS OMITTED AND FOREIGN OPERATORS LIKE PAKISTAN , CYPRUS AND KOREA AND ON THE BLACK EAGLE .
  10. will reccommend from memory : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-War-2006-Sim...0632&sr=1-6 Simon Pearson - "2006 total war" set in West Asia and includes tank battles between Israel and the Arabs with a stunning end also the ever green Tom Clancy - Red Storm Rising Steven zaloga - Tank Combat Central Front: N. A. T. O. Versus Warsaw Pact and liitle rare from zaloga : Red Thrust - Attack on the Central Front: Soviet Tactics and Capabilities in the 1990's Sir john Hacekett - World war III
  11. This is an english translation of the russian book of similar title of the TANKOSMASTER SPECIAL SERIES as listed on aviapress.com - I don't see any major diff between the two in terms of data (basic russian to eng translation) - so those who have the Russian version can skip it
  12. I second that but under current circumstances Osprey's Vanguard series which deals with this subject has been extremely partial to US/UK weaponry not seen any French stuff in an otherwise good series - recommend - merkava , leopard 1 & II, T55/T-72 , BMP , Challenger 1 & 2 in the same Osprey Vanguard series Will also recommend At war Series from MBI which covered Abrams If anyone has Marc Chassillan's book - pls revert on this post
  13. is'nt this similar to the book published by TANKOSMASTER SPECIAL SERIES - by the same author on Aviapress in Russian ? http://www.aviapress.com/viewonekit.htm?OTH-107 Maybe its an English language translation - will recommend it anyway
  14. On the Net I saw is a rare book on the Leclerc by Marc Chassillan published by ETAI 2005 - 191 Pages Char Leclerc : De la guerre froide aux conflits de demain (Relié) de Marc Chassillan Wonder if any forum members have this book - can someone recommend this or put a quick review ? I'm looking for a book that describes the various versions , technical details and future variants
  15. On Cold War I can recommend : military history of the cold war - david miller the fifty year war - freidman - naval institute press both are really good in their categories - however there are a number of quickie paperbacks on the same in the bookstores on charing cross
