  1. It's a complete shitshow and the most annoying part is that everybody is going to blame it on the USA, not Western Europe.
  2. Yeah totally agree. On the other hand, people do get colds! Personally i wouldn't even give a shit about getting it nowadays except for transmission.
  3. Good luck! For what it's worth, I know quite a few people who've gotten Omicron over the past month or so (they're all vaxxed) and nobody has reported anything more than minor cold symptoms that went away in a few days (although some have reported weird taste/smell issues). Ironically enough, I've got standard cold symptoms and was convinced I had it until I tested negative this morning, so looks like I have a cold.
  4. Just had a couple beers and ordered this one online -- all I really know about him is that he was highly regarded as the guy who told Churchill when he was being particularly batshit, etc. Anything good to look forward to?
  5. Just from my personal (well, not personal) experience it does seem like it's getting milder... the two people I know who got Covid in early 2020 were severely f*cked up (one of them still can't taste or smell much of anything), the several people I knew who got it in late 2020 were basically bedridden for 2-3 weeks, and the one guy I knew who got it last week says he didn't feel a thing (he was double-vaxxed though). None of them had any prescription-drug medical treatment. Personally, I'm strongly in the "everybody get vaxxed/boosted but don't live your life in fear after that" crowd, which I think is actually a pretty typical point of view.
  6. That report has been quoted a lot in US sources as well, but their point wasn't at all that they were comparing the Spitfire to civilian aircraft -- the authors' point was that they believed that US fighters would have to fight in a wide variety of environments, which the Spitfire wasn't suited for. Spitfires vs 109s over the channel was basically Ferraris vs Lamborghinis, they didn't have to worry about range, maintenance, etc. Sptis woujld have been terrible on Guadalcanal for example (and did pretty poorly in the PTO overall).
  7. "best fighter" = a fighter with better performance than its adversaries that's also capable of being produced in huge numbers and is reliable etc. Grumman Hellcat.
  8. At least the Taliban won't get too much use out of it!
  9. This is from 2015 but I just stumbled across it. Frickin incredible. https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/boondoggle
  10. Comirnaty is probably the stupidest name for a drug ever and will literally cost lives because of people refusing to take it because the name sucks so hard. SpikeVax much better.
  11. (Desperately hoping this doesn't become a political thing but what can I do) 1) High school history teacher: During the American Revolution the muskets were so inaccurate that everybody lined up 30 feet away from each other but still couldn't hit anything because the bullets basically came out in random directions, which made the riflemen so effective! 2) (same teacher!) Average life expectancy in 1900 was about age 48, which meant by the time you were 30 your hair and teeth were falling out and you basically looked like an 85-year-old present day man.
  12. Dammit, we had a really good and heated thread on this like 10 years ago and I can’t find it. Opposing viewpoints were “ACW was basically a precursor to Ww1, technology wise, massive casualties etc.” vs “no it wasn’t” because uh I forget. Must be some good reading out there.
  13. Completely agree with the imperial presidency stuff.
