  1. hi you are perfectly right. idfdid it by useing 105mm hallow charge ammu. saul
  2. i will be most gratefull if you post the list. i am writing a paper in memory of the late general tal.the last part of the paper deals with a very hypothetical question : what could have happend to rof and imi if the british fo went along with tals idea(in 1970)to develop a market for the 110 mm gun. the list and any comment will be much appriciated. saul
  3. very intetesting. can you remember the year in which the test firing took place? you are the first to mention a two piece ammu. thanks saul
  4. Thanks Old ROF You can find a fairly good picture of the 110mm gun in W.A.Clayden's paper, "UK Tank Gun Philosophy" published in International Defense Review, 10/1981, p. 1319. I am puzzled by his statement "The UK fielded [in the 1975 trilateral evaluation] a 110mm APFSDS round fired from the EXP14-M1 gun" and that the gun outperformed the German (Rh 120mm) and US (M68)contenders. Richard Ogorkiewicz's description of the trilateral evaluation (in his 1991 book) is quite different (see p.52 and p.74). Saul

  6. Stuart Galbraith Thanks a lot. It is true that in 1965-1966 the MOD performed a feasibility study concerning the upgunning of IDF's centurions with L11 guns. The study showed that it was technically feasible to squeeze the L11 into the centurion turret but IDF dropped the idea. Israeli studies showed that the upgrade would be too expensive and would take too much time. Apparantely in 1966 General Tal was not too worried about L7's ability to deal with T-54/T-55. In 1970 he was very worried abouth the T-62 and wanted very much the 110mm gun. Saul
  7. Thanks a lot Old ROF The data in the posts is just what I was looking for. I assume that in April 1971 General Tal was shown the EXP-8 mosdel and not EXP-14. In 1970-71 MOD was very reluctant to spend the 3m pounds which were needed to complete the R.and D. I guess that eventually they spent much more to develop the EXP-14 and still they lost the competition. Orr Kelly's book (Ch.5) claims that the US Armor community, at that time, was very much against the German 120mm gun. Eventually they were forced to buy it by the underesecretary of Defense. Thanks again Saul
  8. Guys, thanks a lot. You helped me a great deal. 1. Please note that Orr Kelly's book, ch. 4, is a good source for general information about the tripatriate competition held during 1974-1977. 2. I did some research about Britain's refusal to sell Chieftains to Israel in 1969. I came across a DOD file in the National Archive, KEW, which tells about Israel's request for the 110mm gun in 1970 and 1971. The FO refused to sell the gun as well. The file states that (in 1970) 3m Pounds Sterling (36m Pounds Sterling in today's money) were needed for the completion of the R and D. Does the story make any sense? 3. In 1970 General Israel Tal, the Merkava's father, had a bright idea: Britain will complete the development of the 110mm gun, Israel will develop a 110mm HEAT round and then both partners will start upgrading the many thousands of tanks which packed the L7 and M68 guns. The British FO killed TAl's vision. Thanks again. Saul
  9. i need information abouut this gun. all i know is that it took part in a competion between british, american and german suppliers which was held in 1974-1975. the british gun lost. the first prototype was designated as exp-7 and the second exp-14. any help and references will be much appriciated. thank you in advance. saul
